General Dal Recipe: Sauté onions and garlic in a thin layer of oil or ghee for a few minutes. Add spices and stir them in well before you add the lentils, crushed tomatoes and water. Let this boil with a lid till the lentils are soft and the consistency saucy. Add salt to taste and also limejuice, coconut milk and coriander leaves after your own preferences.
